General Information
The Pathology Department was established in 1995 and Asst. Prof. Ayhan ATASEVER was appointed as the head of the department in 1996. Our Department has been providing undergraduate education since 1995-1996 academic year and PhD education since 2004. Our Department is comprised of 3 faculty members, including 2 Professors and 1 Assistant Professor, and 1 research assistant. Furthermore, 1 PhD student and 16 Master’s Degree students continue their graduate education. The function of the Pathology Department is to deal with the diagnosis of the diseases and the cause of death by macroscopically and microscopically investigating dead animals that are brought by animal owners or sent by the Clinical Sciences of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, their internal organs, aborted fetuses, tumoral biopsy materials and similar morbid materials. In addition, the fields of study of our department are as follows: Making contribution to the studies and results with histopathological and macroscopic or immuno-histochemical approaches on the disease model in all kinds of infectious, toxicological, immunological, molecular and oncological scientific researches in experimental animals and the investigation of causes of death in relation to forensic cases in domestic, farm, poultry and laboratory animals. Today our department is carrying out projects supported by Erciyes University Scientific Research Projects and TUBITAK.
Physical Areas and Infrastructure
Pathology Department is located on the 2nd floor of the Animal Hospital building of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. At the department where the faculty members’ offices are located, there are laboratory, sectioning laboratory, light microscopy and diagnosis laboratories, archive and warehouse which are also used in routine and research studies. In addition, an immunopathology laboratory, a cell-tissue culture laboratory, a library/seminar room, used in research, Master’s and PhD Degree education, are located.
Education
Veterinary undergraduate program includes General Pathology in Semester V (2 hours theoretical and 2 hours practical courses, 4 ECTS and course curriculum), (Annex-I); Special Pathology I in Semester VI (2 hours theoretical and 2 hours practical courses, 4 ECTS and course curriculum), (Annex-II); Special Pathology II in Semester VII (3 hours theoretical and 2 hours practical courses, 5 ECTS and course curriculum), (Annex-III); Necropsy and Demonstration Courses in Semester VII (1 hour theoretical and 2 hours practical, 3 ECTS and course curriculum), (Annex-IV); Veterinary Professional Special Education Courses in Semesters IX and X (12 hours theoretical, 8 hours practical courses, 30 ECTS and course curriculum).
Within the scope of veterinary Master’s education program, courses that include pathologies and diagnostic techniques belonging to various systems in different animal species are given. If needed, the content of the graduate (Master’s and PhD Education) courses can be accessed through Erciyes University course information package system.
