Department of Pathology
Erciyes University Faculty of Veterinary Medicine was opened in 1995; The Department of Pathology was estab-
lished with the appointment of Prof. Dr. Ayhan ATASEVER In 1996. Then, respectively, Prof. Dr. Latife ÇAKIR
BAYRAM and Research Assistant Dr. Görkem EKEBAŞ were appointed to the
Department. In our department, education has continued until today in parallel with the curriculum of other
Veterinary Faculty Pathology Departments in our country. In addition to education in the department, by process-
ing organ parts, necropsy materials, experimental or field study materials for scientific study, which are routinely
brought by hand; It serves veterinary medicine by making differential diagnoses and scientific data on zoonotic dis-
eases, projects and publications. In undergraduate education, General Pathology, Special Pathology and Necropsy
and Forensic Medicine courses are given by the Department. It also contributes to the lectures of Poultry Diseases,
Laboratory Animal Diseases, Fisheries Diseases and Wild Animal Diseases, which are given as multidisciplinary
in undergraduate education. In 2000, he started his master’s program at Erciyes University Health Sciences Insti-
tute, and in the following years, with the addition of faculty members, he started his doctorate program within
the framework of the rules determined by The Council of Higher Education (student graduated from 12 master’s
programs and 2 doctorate programs until now). Routine pathology laboratory is used in the diagnosis of diseases
of domestic mammals, poultry, fish, exotic and laboratory animals in the Department of Pathology, and when nec-
essary, diagnosis is made using histochemical, immunohistochemical and electron microscopic methods (using the
Central Laboratory of our University). In order to diagnose biopsy materials in a shorter time, in addition to the
“Cryostat Unit” and “Cytopathology Laboratory”, which provide routine diagnostic services, in our Department,
“Molecular Pathology Laboratory” services are used, in which in-situ PCR and in-situ hybridization methods are
actively used in order to catch up with contemporary techniques in research. In addition, necropsy and histopatho-
logical diagnosis services started in 1996, and with the establishment of the Immunohistochemistry laboratory,
routine etiological diagnosis of major infectious diseases (BVD, Border, PPR, Toxoplasmosis, Neosporosis, etc.)
was added by immunoperoxidase test.
In our department, we have two laboratories, one for student practice courses and one research laboratory for
scientific research (Trinocular camera attachment microscope, Education-Research microscope with 5 heads, Im-
munfluorescent microscope).
In addition to the construction of the hospital annex building, our full-fledged Pathology Department Necropsy
Education-Training and Research Building Complex will soon be operating at full capacity (necropsy hall, macros-
copy room, trimming room, tissue follow-up room, display=museum macroscopic specimens archive hall).
