Veterinary Education Institutions and Programs (VEDEK), which was established in Ankara in 2010 for national
accreditation, can be seen in the list of YÖKAK.
Accreditation studies of universities in Turkey are carried out by YÖKAK, an institution accredited by the Euro-
pean Association for Quality Assurance in Higher Education (ENQA). YÖKAK, authorized by ENQA, lists the
universities that want to be accredited and starts their accreditation processes. As a result of a long and difficult
series of visits and inspections, universities that are entitled to receive a full accreditation certificate are given “Full
Accreditation” or “Conditional Accreditation” by YÖKAK. Thus, a university with YÖKAK accreditation is indi-
rectly accredited by ENQA.
On the other hand, YÖK has categorized universities according to their characteristics as Research Universities and
Specialized Universities since 2017 in accordance with the new perspective. In this categorization, Erciyes Univer-
sity (ERU) has also succeeded in being among the Research Universities. ERU, with its nearly half-century history,
19 faculties, 7 institutes, 1 college, 2 vocational colleges, 42 research centers, 2,250 very well-trained academicians,
4,795 highly experienced administrative staff and 52,534 students, has created its own brand, and today is one of
the leading universities in Turkey. Currently, as a research university, ERU has successfully passed the challenging
accreditation procedures and processes mentioned above and has become one of the first three state universities in
Turkey to receive a Full Accreditation Certificate from YÖKAK.
ERU, which has Research University Characteristics, has systematically improved its studies and succeeded to rank
8 in the A2 Category (Universities with High Level Research Performance) with a total score of 48.65 in the
th
new Research Universities Ranking made by YÖK on 13 December 2021. ERU’s goal is to be in the A1 Category
(Universities with High Level Research Performance). ERU has gradually increased its place in the rankings of
universities both in the world and in Turkey, and has achieved a rank in the 301-350 band in the World Rankings
of Universities that are under 50 years of age, 12 among Turkish universities, and 7 among state universities. In

th
addition, ERU was ranked in the top 100, according to the results of the GreenMetric World Universities Ranking
System 2021, which aims to raise environmental consciousness and awareness, and in the top three in Turkey. One
of the main goals of universities is “branding”. Brand universities can be the main determinant in all kinds of issues,
including student profile and academic staff. At this point, it is possible to say that ERU has created its own brand.
Many units of Erciyes University were established on different dates. ERU Faculty of Veterinary Medicine was
established with Law No. 3837 dated 03.07.1992. During the establishment of the faculty, Minister of National
Education Koksal TOPTAN, Rector Prof. Dr. Mehmet SAHIN, and dean Prof. Dr. Nejat AYDIN took on the
task. Prof. Dr. Nejat AYDIN was appointed as the dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Erciyes University
in 1995. Some academicians of the University, including Prof. Dr. Sir Ahmet FAZLI, Prof. Dr. Osman GUNAY,
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kenan AYCAN and Assist. Prof. Dr. Guner KUCUK BAYRAM, were appointed as members of
the first administrative board of the Faculty. The Faculty Administrative Board held its first meeting on September
11, 1995. Our faculty started its educational activities with 7 academicians in the academic year of 1995-1996.
The faculty, which initially started its education life in the ERU rectorate building, moved to the former Faculty of
Architecture and Engineering building on the Sumer Campus as of the 1997-1998 academic year. ERU Faculty of
Veterinary Medicine had its first graduates in the year 2000. Our Faculty, which stayed in the Sumer Campus for
17 years in disadvantaged conditions, was able to move to the education building built by Tes-Is Union on the Uni-
versity Central Campus in 2012. In the beginning years, academic support was received from several universities.
For this, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all academicians.
Higher Education in the EHEA is given in ten different areas. One of them is the field of Medicine and Health
(https://www.study.eu/). Veterinary Medicine Education is among thirteen different disciplines in the field of med-
icine and health (https://www.study.eu/search). Veterinary Medicine education in Turkey consists of 10 semesters
(5 years). In this process, education is based on the evidence of theoretical and practical knowledge, skills and
competencies. In accordance with this basis, the “National Core Curriculum for Veterinary Medicine Education
