Department of Animal Science

HISTORY

The Department was established in 1995. Animal Science is a field that gives necessary information about modern animal breeding. It is a scientific field that provides necessary information on the breeding, care, rehabilitation and health protection procedures of animals by taking animal welfare and behaviors into consideration in order to obtain more fertility from farm animals and thus to do business in productive and profitable livestock.

Since 2018, 2 lecturers (1 Professor, 1 Assoc. Professor) have been working at the Department. There aren’t any assistant teaching staff members at the Department. The Department has a laboratory and rooms for academic staff. There are 3 ongoing research projects (BAP) and 3 TAGEM sheep breeding projects.

Animal Welfare, Animal Behavior, Animal Science I, Animal Science II, Bee Breeding and Animal Breeding courses are obligatory, whereas Dog and Cat Breeding, Dairy Breeding & Herd Management, Animal Shelters, Open Livestock Systems and Breeding are elective courses within the scope of undergraduate program. Within the scope of graduate education, compulsory and elective courses have been being taught in PhD and Master Degree programs affiliated to the Graduate School of Health Sciences since 2007. Currently, the number of graduate students is 6, two of whom are PhD students.

There are practical courses as well as theoretical ones at the Department. In addition, there is a laboratory where various studies are carried out at the Department. The units in ERUTAM are used for research and educational purposes. In addition to these units, research institutes and agricultural enterprises, affiliated to the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and to the private animal husbandry enterprises, are the main research and application areas.
